Event Description
Join us for a discussion of Strangers in Their Own Land: Anger and Mourning on the American Right. Sociologist Arlie Russell Hochschild spent five years immersed in the community around Lake Charles, Louisiana, a Tea Party stronghold, trying to understand why people would act against their own interests. She specifically zooms in on why people in Cancer Alley, where pollution is destroying the local environment and making people sick, were against environmental regulation and continued to support policies and politicians who were destroying their homes and harming their health. The resulting book was a 2016 National Book Award Finalist in the non-fiction category.
