Protect our migrating feathered friends

Here in the Houston area, we are lucky to be on one of the major spring migration pathways for birds. Birds can become massively disoriented by outdoor lighting at night as they fly over and can go off course or even die. Please turn out all outdoor lights during this time. Let's help our feathered friends either travel safely through or come home to Texas by turning out non-essential lights after dark.

<publishDate>Wed, 04 Mar 2026 20:11 -0500</publishDate><date>03/04/2026</date>8:11 pm<location></location>

Jun 11, 2026: EcoCenter Weekly Nursery Workdays

Grow native plants. Restore the prairie.

At the GBF EcoCenter Greenhouse, staff and volunteers cultivate native plants to restore and manage coastal tallgrass prairie across the Galveston Bay region.

Every Thursday and Saturday from 8:00–11:00 AM, volunteers work in the nursery to support one of the most endangered ecosystems in North America. This work helps create habitat for wildlife and strengthens natural flood protection.

NOTE: Saturday shifts are currently postponed until further notice. We hope to resume shifts as soon possible and will be sure to send out an email when they resume.

As a Nursery Volunteer, you will:

Weed and pot plants

Mix soil and rotate plants

Clean and sort seeds

Assist with seasonal nursery maintenance

No experience is necessary; we will show you what to do!

Sign-up on our volunteer portal: https://volunteer.galvbay.org/need/detail/?need_id=1103759

Your time in the nursery helps grow native plants that restore habitat, support wildlife, and protect communities around Galveston Bay.

Why Do So Many Houston Area Streams Run from West to East?

Having paddled canoes and kayaks on Houston’s waterways for some time, Tom Douglas had noticed that many of them flow from west to east. Many of the world’s rivers must make detours on their way to the sea, but why have so many of ours veered off to the east at places where their southward path toward the Gulf appears to have been blocked? After considerable reading and consulting with a couple of bona fide fluvial geomorphologists, he learned the answer.

Along with water, rivers also carry sediment. How this sediment is moved around and eventually deposited can have many effects, both in the short term and the long term. In our region, these processes have posted many “left turn only” signs for streams as they work their way to the south. We will also see how a story that began several million years ago continues to influence our daily lives.

Free parking in the garage. Enter the garage from Feagan St.
Please do not park in any of the reserved spots in the garage and do not park in the lot across the street. There are four levels in the UW parking garage. Enter from the first level through the glass doors to the main entrance and reception area.
There is Metro bus access via the #40 bus o Waugh Dr/ South Heights Blvd. or the #85 bus on Washington Ave.

Herbs do more than taste good in a cup, they interact with our nervous system, digestion, and stress response in very specific ways. In this fun hands-on workshop, we’ll explore a small group of plants and talk about actions like:

- nervines (herbs that support the nervous system)
- carminatives (herbs that ease digestion)
- gentle adaptogens (herbs that help the body respond to stress)

We will discuss these herbs in clear, down-to-earth language. Through story and sensory play, each person will choose the plants that resonate with them and blend a small loose-leaf tea to take home, along with simple guidelines for using it safely and intentionally.

Corporate campaigning can be a powerful tool for holding businesses accountable and winning meaningful change. Over the past decade, Toxic-Free Future’s Mind the Store program pushed some of the nation’s largest retailers to phase out toxic chemicals, strengthen safer chemicals policies, and respond to pressure from consumers, workers, investors, and frontline communities. This training will explore key lessons learned from those campaigns and how organizers can apply them to fights against toxic chemical producers, hazardous waste facilities, plastic pollution, and other polluters.

Through case studies on campaigns targeting methylene chloride in paint strippers and PFAS in food packaging, we’ll explore lessons learned from more than a decade of corporate accountability organizing. The session will examine strategies and tactics to win, while also discussing the opportunities and limitations of market-based advocacy as part of broader environmental health and justice organizing and campaigning.

nature-based solution: the Coastal Heritage Preserve on West Galveston Island.
Galveston Island sits in the Galveston Bay Estuary, facing the Gulf of Mexico. Bayside wetlands improve
water quality, support fisheries, and buffer storms. Coastal prairies absorb floodwaters and sequester
carbon. Dunes and beaches guard against erosion from a high-energy coast. These habitats are in steep
decline under pressure from development, sea-level rise, erosion, and subsidence. Protecting land
before it’s fragmented is the most cost-effective, durable intervention we have. Since 2010, with
partners across agencies and the community, Artist Boat has assembled a 1,039-acre sanctuary with a
goal of 1,400 acres — a living laboratory for resilience. Thus far, $24M+ has been secured through 14
transactions to make the vision real. With hope, Artist Boat is striving to conserve the next 204 acres.
Learn how hope, persistence, and hard work have turned an uncertainty into a “given” with willing
sellers and an invested community from the national to state to local level. Time for interactive
discussion with the speaker will be provided. Please register for this talk on www.eventbrite.com at
Starts January 26, 2026
Faith communities of all faith/spiritual traditions are invited to join the Cool Congregations Cohort in
2026. The cohort will meet monthly online throughout the year, and the facilitator will work with you to
accomplish two goals during the course of the year: (1) develop a plan to reduce your faith community’s
carbon footprint by 50% by 2030 (in line with goals sent by climate scientists) and (2) incorporate care
for the earth into all aspects of your faith community’s life. The cohort facilitator, who has decades of
experience in “greening” of faith communities, will give individualized attention to the 10 faith
communities that participate, helping them to discover ways to both reduce their carbon footprint and
renew their faith community’s commitment to care for the earth. Participating faith communities will
also learn from each other’s experiences and support each other throughout the program. This program
is organized by the Interfaith Environmental Network of Houston, a Houston affiliate of the Texas
chapter of Interfaith Power & Light, but is open to any faith community that would like to participate,
and is not restricted to Houston- nor Texas-based faith communities. Please register your faith
What do human health, animal health, and environmental health have in common? The answer is One Health, a framework that recognizes the interconnectedness of the well-being of people, animals, and ecosystems.

Join the Citizens' Environmental Coalition (CEC) for our June virtual member meeting as we explore the fundamentals of One Health and why this concept is becoming increasingly important in addressing issues such as air and water quality, emerging diseases, biodiversity loss, climate impacts, and community resilience.

This introductory session is designed for anyone who wants to better understand how environmental and public health are connected. No prior knowledge of One Health is required.

This virtual member meeting is FREE to attend and open to both CEC members and guests. Register today to receive the virtual meeting link.

Guest Speaker(s)

Coral Lozada, Ph.D. is a Sustainability Faculty Fellow in the Office of Sustainability at Houston Methodist Academic Institute. She has a PhD in coastal and marine systems sciences and her research background in mixed-methods approaches allows her to approach sustainability with an interdisciplinary perspective. Much of her work has focused on how community perceptions and values influence resilience to both natural and man-made disasters, and how coastal communities adapt to changes in their livelihoods as a result of these disasters or shifts. She looks forward to enhancing Methodist hospital’s resilience and contributing to its environmental sustainability using a One Health lens.
By Suzanne Simpson

Join the Houston Chapter of Native Prairies Association of Texas for their Monthly Meeting featuring: “Down by the Bay: Strategic Land Conservation in the Galveston Bay Watershed” from Suzanne Simpson, Galveston Bay Foundation’s Director of Land Protection and author of Wild Houston: Explore the Amazing Nature in and Around the Bayou City.

The changing land use of the Greater Houston metroplex places a considerable strain on our natural resources, especially in coastal ecosystems. Working in partnership with the public and private sectors, Galveston Bay Foundation (GBF) addresses these challenges through strategic land acquisition, conservation easements, science-based land stewardship. To date, GBF has protected 21,000 acres of prairies, wetlands, and coastal forests that support wildlife and improve water quality. Learn about GBF’s land conservation strategies that support and protect Houston’s most important natural resource: Galveston Bay.

Presenter bio: Suzanne Simpson is an ecologist and land conservation professional with an infectious passion for protecting Texas’ natural resources. As Galveston Bay Foundation’s Director of Land Protection, Suzanne leads the acquisition of conservation assets in partnership with private landowners and public agencies. Her efforts have bolstered GBF’s conservation profile, which now exceeds 21,000 acres of coastal habitat that protect biodiversity while preserving rural heritage and sustaining agricultural economies. Suzanne brings a practical, field-based perspective to conservation, informed by experience working across diverse ecosystems and collaborating with landowners, conservation organizations, and community partners. Other than conserving land, discovering salamanders, and photographing warblers, Suzanne’s greatest joy is sharing her passion for natural resource conservation with diverse audiences.

We ask that you register for this meeting and for meetings going forward, particularly if you are coming in person. This will help us greatly to keep track of attendance.

Sign-up on our volunteer portal: https://volunteer.galvbay.org/need/detail/?need_id=1103759

focus on resilience, mitigation, and adaptation to one of thrivance in a time of political, economic, and
ecological chaos. While the threats are manifold and extreme, it is important to move past reactionary
responses to working towards a better now and future, addressing the fundamental issues and
challenges that existed prior to this immediate period and will persist after, unless action is taken.
Community farming is integral to thrivance. It fosters better physical, emotional, psychological, and
spiritual health. It helps repair the relationship between humanity and the natural world. It creates a
web of community connections, friendships, and reciprocity. And finally, community farming brings joy
and beauty into our lives. Certainly, community farming is not the entire solution but, as a site of
dialogue, it can also contribute to other needed work. Consider thrivance through community farming!
It is led by Kristi Rangel, Houston-based multi-disciplinary artist and education advocate. This year, the Witness Series is excited to celebrate its fifth year of being community together. This year’s Witness Series will explore the many profound experiences that Communities of Color have in the Land of Southeast Texas and along our waterways. The Witness Series is co-curated in partnership with artists from the Native American, African American, Latinx, Pacific Islander and Asian communities. Every Witness experience is designed to bring communities together through the power of nature and provide historically underserved communities with greater access to nature-based opportunities. Attendees become co-authors, editors and observers as they take part in these participatory public art experiences centered around green spaces and environmental equity.

The 5th year of the Witness Series will be explored through the artistry and lens of Tomii Culmer. We will Bear Witness to the power of community building and artmarking in green spaces through her photos.

Kristi Rangel created the Witness Series, in 2021 in collaboration with Jaime González, a Houston-based conservationist because of their shared belief that environmental justice is a basic human right.

Please register your faith
community at www.eventbrite.com at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/1975020502489 (only one sign-

The Gessner Center is Galveston Bay Foundation’s new visitor hub in Kemah, TX. It will be home to our aquatic nursery program—where we grow and prepare wetland plants that are critical to restoring habitat, improving water quality, and supporting the long-term health of Galveston Bay.

As an Aquatic Nursery Volunteer, you will assist GBF staff with hands-on plant care.

Depending on the needs of the nursery, may help with watering, weeding, trimming, shifting plants, repotting wetland plants, and removing algae buildup from nursery ponds.

Some workdays may also include planting in our wetland pools and will be communicated in advance.

If you would like to help rotate or retrieve plants from the aquatic pools, you are encouraged to bring tall rubber boots.

Expect to get dirty and muddy!

for the earth into all aspects of your faith community’s life.

By caring for nursery plants that will be used in restoration, you directly support healthier wetlands and a healthier Galveston Bay.

No experience is necessary. Staff will show you everythingyou need to know. Be prepared to walk across uneven terrain. Restrooms will be available onsite.
