Public Citizen Invites You to attend TCEQ's next meeting to ask them to protect us and not polluters
9:30 AM - 11:30 AM Central
During the most recent TCEQ Commissioners’ meeting, Public Citizen’s TCEQ Watchdog Campaign presented findings from its review of the agency’s annual performance to TCEQ leadership, and it did not go well. TCEQ Commissioners dismissed the numbers and concerns that the agency is failing to protect communities.
All of the data in our TCEQ Year-in Review report came from the agency’s own publicly available information, and the numbers don’t lie.
In other words, we simply recited the TCEQ’s own numbers back to its leadership.
TCEQ conducted 3,600 fewer on-site investigations than the previous year – and the fewest in eight years. It responded to just 300 of 9,000 environmental complaints within 24 hours. And it dismissed all of the public’s comments in key rule-makings but amended the rules at the industry’s request.
On April 1, TCEQ commissioners are meeting again, and we think they should hear it from you: TCEQ should protect communities – NOT corporate polluters.
Sign up to give public comments to TCEQ on Wednesday, April 1, at 9:30 a.m. For the second question of the sign-up form, use “Item 53,” which is the public comment portion on the hearing agenda. You can join the meeting virtually or in person to tell commissioners:
- Agency leadership should take responsibility for its lackluster performance and commit to improving agency response to complaints and on-site inspections of polluters.
- Meaningful public participation in permitting and rule-making is not optional. The TCEQ must ensure that the public’s feedback is incorporated into rule-making and permits, and their concerns are addressed – not dismissed.
- The TCEQ has a duty to protect the environment and public health – not polluters. The agency must take its enforcement responsibilities seriously and work to gain immediate compliance in all 1,400 backlogged enforcement cases.
Read our TCEQ Year in Review and join us on April 1 to hold the “Reluctant Regulator” accountable.
